Dr Betts is a climate modeller at the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research in the Met Office. His research centres on the role of land vegetation in climate change, both as a feedbackthrough "natural" vegetation responses and as a forcing through direct human-induced land cover change. His current interests include the evaluation ofregional ecosystem influences on global climate sensitivity, and the application of whole-system approaches to the assessment of anthropogenic land cover change impacts on climate.
